Same-Day Sick Care Q & A

What types of health issues warrant same-day appointments?

LG Pediatrics understands that you can’t plan for sickness, and they want to be there when your child is in need. If your child has severe coughing, fever, asthma complications, symptoms of an ear infection, rashes, wheezing in the chest, vomiting, or an injury from an accident, call the office to make a same-day appointment. A sports injury may also require same-day treatment. Their staff tries their best to make room for you in the schedule so you can see a doctor immediately.

Don’t walk in with a sick child as you can’t be guaranteed to be seen right away. Calling ahead means you avoid long wait times in office.

A same-day sick appointment should be used to treat a condition that is urgent, but not life threatening.

Same-day sick visits are not for immunizations, well-child exams, prescription refills, sports physicals, or diabetic checkups.

What should I do if I can’t get an appointment or it’s after hours?

When an appointment isn’t available, the staff is happy to offer telephone advice. LG Pediatrics offers a free, after-hours nurse advice line that can help you treat cough, flu, and ear infection symptoms until you can get into the office during normal business hours. If it’s a life-threatening emergency, the advice line will advise you call 911 or go to your local Emergency room.

What are the symptoms of an ear infection?

Ear infections are common in children. Your child may complain of ear pain, or tug at their ears when they have an earache. Other signs that an ear infection is causing illness:

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite or vomiting
  • Irritability
  • Drainage from the ear
  • Trouble sleeping

Should my child go to the doctor with cold and flu symptoms?

Cold and flu symptoms, such as serious coughing and high fever, benefit from a same-day visit. This allows the doctors to rule out a more serious condition and they can help relieve symptoms so your child is more comfortable.

Treating a cold or flu in its early stages can also prevent it from turning into a more serious condition, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
